A circuit consists of electrons flowing from the negative terminal of a battery to the positive terminal of the battery. However, these electrons must then return to the negative terminal, or the current will stop flowing. The electrons are forced into this higher potential by an electromotive force. The electromotive force represents an electric potential or voltage and is measured in Volts.
